WebP is a relatively new, open source image format. In comparison to traditional JPG and PNG image formats, WebP images have a 25-35% smaller file size, making these images faster and more efficient to use online. WebP allows users to store images in lossy or lossless formats; using a 'predictive neighbouring pixel' codec similar to that used by VP8 videos. Like PNG images, alpha-transparency is supported. And there are currently efforts underway to add animation support too, to rival GIF. The WebPStack makes it super easy to add WebP images to all your websites, while still taking care of the older browsers currently lacking WebP support.
